Job Summary:
Under the supervision of the Artistic Services Manager and the Music Director/Conductor perform all duties associated with securing, distribution, and storing of musical scores and maintain a close and highly responsive relationship to the work activities of the Orchestra Personnel Manager and administrative work of the Artistic Services Manager.

Compensation: $16,250 per year paid bi-weekly

Responsibilities:

Music Preparation:

  • Checks and confirms incoming and outgoing sets of parts and scores for completeness and condition in a timely manner.
  • Ensures that bowings, rehearsal letter/numbers, and measure numbers are compatible with the conductor’s score and the distributed parts.
  • Prepares sheet music that is clear and legible, as well as the proper size. This includes, but is not limited to the use of Adobe Acrobat, Adobe Photoshop, ForScore, and Finale (or other designated Music Engraving Software). Music should be free of extraneous markings and copied-in markings. Preparation includes but is not limited to editing, proofreading, distributing, and marking of all string parts.
  • Distributes music to designated musicians for each concert cycle via the Youngstown Symphony Musicians Portal website (for digital use and print at home) or in person if requested by an individual musician. Ensure proper collection and return of music to the original source following each concert cycle.
  • Assembles and breaks down orchestra folders.
  • Ensures prompt return of rented or borrowed materials and adheres to applicable copyright laws and guidelines.

 

Concert/Rehearsal Duties

  • Assists Production Manager with the orchestra setup on stage as needed.
  • Arrives at least 1 hour prior to the scheduled start time of rehearsals and concerts to ensure that all musicians have the proper music, and if not, provides substitutions.
  • Checks with conductor upon their arrival, sets conductor score on the stand and collects and stores at end of service.

 

Administrative/Library Management

  • Maintains the orchestra’s collection of scores and parts in an orderly and organized fashion; repairs and maintains parts and folders
  • Maintains accurate orchestra performance records
  • Helps to prepare and submit ASCAP and BMI reports
  • Tracks all items borrowed from the library (i.e. individual parts, study parts, scores, reference material, ect.) and ensures their timely return
  • Helps to create and disseminate instrumentation sheets for all programs
  • Prepares music for all auditions.

 

Other

  • Maintains professional knowledge, including the ability to stay current with best practices in music librarianship.
  • Other duties relating to the position may be assigned as necessary.

 

Position Requirements

  • Music training required
  • Thorough knowledge of orchestral repertoire
  • Knowledge of computer software, including but not limited to, Adobe Photoshop, ForScore, Finale, Microsoft, and Google Suites. 
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 40 pounds
  • Ability to work autonomously
  • Willingness to learn
  • Ability to adhere to orchestra schedule including days, evenings, and weekends as required
  • All duties must be performed and executed within the stipulations of the current CBA between the Youngstown Symphony Orchestra and AFM local 86-242

The Youngstown Symphony Orchestra is a per-service ensemble with a season consisting of approximately 25 regular services and varying educational and outreach services.

Pay for the 2025/2026 Season – Principal: $133.40 per service and Section: $116.00 per service. Cartage and doubling added when applicable.
